New Insights: Strategies To Increase Views From Related Shorts Links

Hi there. YouTube is launching a new feature that allows creators to see their impressions broken down by new and returning viewers. Having access to these insights could help you adapt your content strategy if you want to see what type of content is attracting which category of viewer. This filtered view is being rolled out in YouTube Studio Analytics in Advanced mode. We're thrilled to delve into this and explore how we can support creators like you with new, sophisticated analyses leveraging this new feature.

Two Strategies to Increase Views From Related Shorts Links

Last month, we highlighted Related Shorts, a new YouTube feature that enables creators to add links to other videos on their Shorts. The analysis we featured showed how Related Shorts can increase long-form views for new uploads by 10% or more. Now, we’re sharing updates on how the content and timing of the videos make a difference when linking them.

Linking conceptually similar Shorts to long-form videos may lead to a larger views lift

We looked at a major entertainment channel and found that they achieved a 20% increase in long-form video views by strategically linking their long-form content to their Shorts through the Related Shorts feature. When analyzing their approach, we observed that Shorts with titles and themes that closely aligned with their linked long-form videos attracted the most viewers, resulting in increased engagement with the full-length video. An example of a Short with a similar theme is one that features a snippet of a long-form video and links the long-form version as a related link.

Takeaway: The more you can relate your short and long-form content, the better. Look for opportunities to align titles and themes of linked Shorts and long-form videos. This synergy can boost engagement and drive increased interest in longer content.

Linking new long-form videos to new Shorts may lead to a higher lift in views

We also examined the channel of a prominent short-form creator who successfully transitioned into long-form content by leveraging the Related Shorts feature to link long-form videos to Shorts. On average, the creator had 100+ Shorts connected to their latest long-form video.

Interestingly, Shorts posted within three days of the long-form video drove more long-form views than other Shorts. This trend can be attributed to the fact that Shorts typically experience their highest viewership within the first seven days, after which viewership rapidly declines.

Takeaway: Linking your new long-form videos to the most recent Shorts may be most impactful. This can benefit traffic to long-form content because Shorts typically have their highest views in the first seven days.

Note that these findings don’t mean that you should post more Shorts. We recommend using the Shorts you do post more strategically by directing viewers to your new, conceptually similar long-form videos. This will help utilize existing or planned Shorts uploads to grow long-form views.
